HoD, Department of Building
Welcome to Department of Building, Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. The Bachelor of Science (Building) Degree Programme started in the Department in the 1970/71 Session, with the establishment of the Faculty of Environmental Studies. The programme, which commenced with two students in enrolment, graduated one student each during the 1972/73 and 1973/74 academic session.
In subsequent years the number of graduating students increased gradually with 11 each for 1975 and 1976. From 1977 to 1982 the number of students who graduated, from the Department are 19, 22, 33, 32 and 50 respectively. The largest number of graduating students was recorded in the 1982/83 sessions when eighty three (83) students graduated. With the down turn of the nation’s economy and its effects on the activities within the construction industry, there has been a decline in the number of graduating students (29,12,10 8,8 and 23 for 1989, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994 and 1996 respectively) It is however hoped that recent developments in the country, particularly the legal recognition of the building profession and the establishment of the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON), may cause a reversal of this trend.
Mission, Vision and Philosophy
The mission of the Department is to engage in teaching, research and dissemination of highest quality knowledge in the area of building profession which will profoundly address problems relating to the built environment in the world, with particular reference to Nigeria. The Department will strive for excellence in research that will improve humsn conditions as well as teaching and training of versatile professional builders that will be globally competitive.
The vision of the Department is consistent with that of the University, The department wishes to be a premier Department of Building in Nigeria and among the leading Centre of excellence in the world for dissemination of knowledge and researches in building constrution, operation management and maintenance of buildings; and host of other issues relating to the built environment as well as serving as a major pillar of the building profession in sub-sahara Africa in general and Nigeria in particular.
