Courses

The course covers advanced research techniques and skills focused on undertaking literature review, defining and formulating a problem within the context of the literature, data collection and analysis and formal writing for publication in international journals and in thesis and dissertations.

The course examines the use of IT in environmental Design. Covers visualization, simulation, modeling GIS, Enterprise management systems, Infrastructure management, etc.

The course examines urban morphology from the perspective of elements and patterns in morphological organization, change and transformation and the use of morphology as a tool in urban analysis. Specific subjects of interest include elements in morphological organization, shape, structure and form of cities, socio-spatial organization of people and land uses and patterns of growth and change and forces shaping the patterns.

The course focuses on understanding the urban development process in Nigeria in the context of international experiences and practices. Global urban development practices is examined in terms of institutions, processes, management practices including regulatory practices (including funding) and role of the different tiers of government. Nigerian practices are examined with a view to identifying strength, weakness and opportunities and to identifying way to improve the situation particular for the practice of urban design.

Urban design deals with the manipulation spaces to create places for people in cities. This course addresses the three fundamental concepts of space, place and cities. It covers issues such as the concept of space, manipulation of space to create boundaries, concept of place and place identity, the social production of the built environment, the city production process, livability and place attractiveness, change and transformation in cities.

This seminar addresses fundamental issues relating to the conception of urban design, practice and research in urban design and case studies of urban design interventions. Issues covered includes definition of urban design, relationship of urban design to other design professions, scope of urban design interventions, case studies of intervention, the urban design process, professional regulations and ethics in urban design, researching issues in urban design, formulating research proposals for thesis research in urban design.

Interactive and sequential investigations into issues of form, materiality, tectonics, and structural systems. Small scale interventions. Credit needs translated into functional relationship and outdoor spatial forms; introduced through the design of a residential garden.

This is a studio that focuses on analysis. The class is expected to pick a particular city and analyze it from both a physical, social, and symbolic perspective, including addressing issues of servicing, types of spaces, activities in spaces, problems, etc.

This is a comprehensive studio aimed at developing an urban design proposal to address a particular problem. The problem may be in the aspect of urban renewal, new neighborhood planning, or heritage area renewal.

This last studio will be focused on specific urban design issue problem. Groups of students will study a particular urban design issue from different cities and offer solutions that address all dimensions of the problem in including physical, social, and symbolic dimensions. Knowledge in addressing the issues will be shared across all groups.

Individually conducted research into a major aspect of a selected urban design issue and problem. A work of major design importance demonstrating the students’ contribution to the field of urban design. Selective review of existing literature, documentation and implementation strategies. Research on an urban design thesis topic.

The technical research report on the topic design–thesis specialization on MUD–810. Documentation of the problem definition and solution with implementation strategy on the said project. The technical report in written format is presented and discussed at a jury before final binded copies submitted for final acceptance.

Seminar discussions to help guide students in research methods, documentation and writing styles in research paper. A survey of existing research pertaining to urban design, landscape design and environmental planning issues.

Role of transportation in planning; land use, population distribution and economy; contemporary transportation system; travel demand estimation and cost benefit analysis, trip generation and distribution, model split, original – destination studies, transport surveys; transportation policies and programmes; urban mass transit.

The course focuses on the use of regeneration as a tool in the revitalization of urban areas. Concept and practices of regeneration are examined along with case studies to understand approach, process and challenges in the implementation of regeneration projects.

Seminar discussions to help guide students in research methods, documentation and writing styles in research paper. A survey of existing research pertaining to urban design, landscape design and environmental planning issues.

The course concentrates on understanding social life in the public realm of cities in Nigeria. The course examines the concept of public and private in cities and the nature of social life in public spaces. Specific Nigerian case studies are examined to understand social composition, activities and use of public space and the nature of connection and attachment to the public spaces.
